Interview Tips for Travel Nurses

As many of you already know we are currently facing a changing market on interviews for Traveling Nurses. You have found the assignment of your dreams and have already finished the application and skill checklists. Your recruiter has sent over your paperwork and now you wait for the phone call. The wait for the interview over the phone can be stressful and leaves you questioning what you are going to say and what is appropriate to say. Cirrus Medical Staffing is here to help prevent you from the “I wished I’d asked that” afterthought that almost everyone gets after an interview.

Here are just a few things to remember to ask while on an interview:

  1. Larger hospitals may have several floors for the same specialty.
  2. Ask about orientation into the unit that you could possibly float to.
  3. What is the nurse/patient ratio and is there any assistance on the unit?
  4. Cover any time off needed for your assignment.

Remember, during an interview for a Travel Nursing Job you are selling yourself. Inform the nurse manager of any credentials, licenses, charting, etc that sets you apart from the others who have applied.

Tips when closing the interview:

  1. Ask when a decision will be made and repeat that you are perfect for the job.
  2. If the interviewer says they think they will be making an offer, ask if you can notify your company to begin the next steps. Don’t be bashful about accepting verbally!
  3. If the interviewer does not mention a Traveling Nurse Job offer, then ask for the offer by asking when they think you would be able to start. This will give you an idea what decision the interviewer is leaning towards.

There are some cases where you will have to make the initiative for the interview by making the first phone call. For most people this is not the preferred method, but you are competing with many more travelers than typical due to the limited number of openings currently and the phone call may be necessary. When calling for an interview, be prepared to leave a remarkable message or to possibly carry out the interview right then. Before you dial the number have your list of questions prepared and in front of you.  If you get the nurse manager on the phone, give him/her your name and your company’s name.  Let them know that you have been submitted for a travel position on their unit and wanted to schedule a time to interview. If you do not get an answer, leave a detailed message with the same information you would have given if you had spoken to the nurse manager. You should also add the times they can reach you for an interview.

If you’ve experienced another assertive method to obtain a successful interview, please share it with us and our readers. We also welcome any other interviewing tips! We appreciate your help!

Help answer the question about Nursing Interview Tips

I have an A&E Band 5 nursing interview this week. Any tips from people who interview?
I'm being interviewed on Thursday for a Band 5 post in Southampton A&E. I've been reading Emergency Nurse, talked to one of the Sisters and reviewed the local articles on our A&E. Does anyone have any other interview tips. I'm always very nervous during interviews. Does anyone have any tips on what they look for in a candidate?
