Growing Incidence of Cancer Remission and How to Prevent it

There seems to be a growing trend of cancer remission in people who were treated previously using conventional treatments and declared cancer free. There were two such recent occurrences that grabbed the media attention in the US. First was an announcement made by Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Presidential candidate John Edwards, that her breast cancer had recurred and was in stage 4 and now considered treatable, but not curable. Two days later, white house spokesperson Tony Snow announced that his colon cancer had recurred and he would have to undergo treatment again, possibly a surgery.
Cancer affects the whole body and not just a specific organ. It requires a holistic treatment that would address the following factors:
– toxins in the body
– a highly acidic environment produced by excess lactic acid secretion by cancerous cells
– stress reduction
– weight loss to reduce the amount of fat in the body
– changes in diet to improve nutrition and improve immunity
The conventional treatment simply tries to kill the cancerous cells by various means. It doesn’t try to prevent the factors that promote the growth of cancerous cells.
Surgery tries to remove the tumor from the body, but can’t remove cancerous cells that have spread to the neighboring tissue or other parts of the body and yet to become a full blown tumor. As a result, these cells continue to grow abnormally and a new tumor shows up after some time.
Chemotherapy takes a different approach. It tries to kill fast growing cells in the body, hoping that it would kill all the fast growing cancerous cells. In doing so, it damages many types of fast growing healthy cells in the body. This leads to a lowered immunity which significantly increases chances of infections in various parts of the body. The lowered immunity also accelerates the damage to the cells by free radicals in the body, a leading cause of cancer. If cancer was created by toxins in the body, chemotherapy would do nothing to remove them and the same toxins can cause a remission.
A holistic treatment would also consider diet along with conventional treatment to treat cancer completely and also help in prevention :
– Avoid processed foods and refined carbohydrates
– Eat more vegetables to get more antioxidant vitamins to protect the cells
– Increase fruits in the diet to help in removing toxins from the body and boost the immune system
– Choose whole grains and sprouts instead of refined grains
– Try to consume turmeric daily, it is a potent anti-cancer spice
– Avoid tobacco and alcohol
– Reduce mental stress to strengthen the immune system
– Keep a positive attitude to speed up the healing process

Cancer remission is often thought to mean that the cancer has been cured. However, this is not always true.
There are different classifications of remission – complete and partial remission.
Complete remission means that there are no signs or symptoms of cancer. This can mean the cancer has been cured, or cancer may still be present in the body.
Partial remission refers to the point when few signs and symptoms of cancer remain, however there is a noticeable decrease of cancer cells.
